Overview

Broughton Hall has been held by the same family since the eleventh century, an unusual continuity even by English standards. The estate has reinvented its purpose multiple times across that span, and rewilding is the latest. Three thousand acres of Yorkshire Dales country are being returned to native broadleaf forest, with hundreds of thousands of trees already planted and old hedgerows restored. The Sanctuary's work treats land and people as the same project: the forest that holds wild swimming pools and sound baths is also a long-term ecological restoration in progress.

Healing Focus

Broughton Sanctuary combines the healing power of wild wellbeing with a wide range of nature related activities, healing therapies and practices, featuring an ever-changing array of weekly residential retreats or self-guided programs. Broughton Sanctuary’s Avalon Wellbeing Centre offers regular yoga and meditation sessions, forest bathing, woodland saunas, sound baths, fire temple gatherings, psychotherapeutic work, varying forms of bodywork and more.

To discover what makes Broughton Sanctuary truly special, head outdoors. Try wild swimming, meditation labyrinths, moon baths, ice bathing, sweat lodge, or simply walk the Sanctuary’s carefully designed trails as you explore one of England’s most transformative, and inspiring, nature recovery projects.

Hotel

At the heart of Broughton Sanctuary is Broughton Hall, a 16th Century architectural gem in one of the most beautiful parts of the United Kingdom, the Yorkshire Dales, that lets you live out your wildest English countryside fantasies. Classic Elizabethan and Georgian features have been updated with modern amenities to meet contemporary standards, while preserving the building’s historical character. Whether you choose to stay in the Hall itself or one of the 19 Holiday Homes – sophisticated conversions of barns, cottages, stables and more – you will enjoy the perfect blend of country-house beauty and modern luxury.

Broughton Sanctuary is also home to one of England’s most exciting rewilding projects. They have planted 350,000 native broadleaf trees to create new woodlands, and restored a wide array of natural habitats radically boosting biodiversity. Feeling inspired? Join a nature recovery project, try foraging for wild food, or take the plunge in a wild swimming pond. Feeling less wild? Relax in the Avalon Thermal Suite, or enjoy a delicious plant-based meal at the Bistro Utopia in the award-winning Walled Garden.
